A Sodium aluminum silicate and containing inclusions of white calcite and pyrite, Lapis Lazuli was called the stone sapphirus by the ancient Greeks and Romans until it's current term began to be used in the Middle Ages. The ancient Egyptians used the stone as far back as 3100 B.C. for jewelry, as well as ground it for use as a medicine and cosmetic.
